Light mashrabiya

2021, Wood, LED lights, foam, plexiglas, motion sensor, 180 × 80 × 10 cm

The mashrabiya is a screen and architectural element characteristic of Islamic architecture, traditionally installed in windows, openings, or walls. Its primary function was to create a boundary between the interior of the home and the outside, allowing air and light to pass through while preserving the privacy of those within. The work was originally created for a gallery located in a former well house in Jaffa, once inhabited by a Muslim family. In response to the site, I created an interactive “light mashrabiya” made of LED lights, matching the dimensions of the room’s original narrow, elongated window. As viewers approach, the mashrabiya illuminates, emitting a vivid green glow.
